Multiple Intelligence

Intelligence come from the Latin Verb Intelligence , which means “to understand”. Individuals differ from one another in their ability to understand complex ideas to adapt effectively to environment, to learn from experience, to engage in various form of reasoning. Although these individual differences can  be substantial, they are never entirely consistent : a given person’s intellectual performance will very an different occasions, as judged by different criteria.

Another sample and efficient definitions is the ability to apply knowledge in order to perform better in an environment. The most widely accepted theory of intelligence is based on psychometric testing or intelligence quotient (

The commitment to reach intelligence quotient is whatever you can do begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it (Agus Nggermanto, 2005:152)

Conceived by Howard Gardner. Multiple intelligences are eight different ways to demonstrate intellectual ability. The types of multiple intelligence namely :

a. Visual / Spatial Intelligence

Ability to perceive the visual. These learner tend to think in pictures and need to create vivid mental images to retain information. They enjoy looking at maps, chart, pictures, videos, and movies.
Their skill include : puzzle building, reading, writing, understanding charts and graphs, a good sense of direction, sketching, pointing, creating visual metaphors and analogies (perhaps through the visual art), manipulating images, construction, fixing, designing practical objects, interpreting visual images. Possible career interest (e.g architects, interior designers, inventor, mechanics, visual artist, etc.

b. Verbal / Linguistic Intelligence 

Ability to use word and language, these learners have highly auditory skills and are generally elegent speakers. They think in words rather than pictures.
Their skill include : listening, speaking, writing, story telling, explaining, teaching, remembering information, analyzing language usage. Possible career interest (e.g poet, journalist, writer, teacher, lawyer, politician, translator.

c. Logical / Mathematic Intelligence

Ability to use reason, logic, and number. These learners think conceptually in logical and numerical.
Pattern making connections between pieces of information. Always curious about the world around them, these learner as lots of questions and like to do experiment.
Their skill include : Problem solving, classifying \ and organizing information, working with abstract concepts to figure out the relationship of each to the other, doing controlled experiments, questioning and wondering about natural events, performing complex mathematical, calculation and working with geometric shapes. Possible career interest (e.g scientist, engineer, computer programmers, researchers, accountants, mathematicians, etc.

d. Bodily / Kinesthetic Intelligence.

Ability to control body movement and handle objects skillfully. These learners express themselves through movement. They have a good sense of balance and eye – hand coordination. E.g Ball play. Through interacting with the space around them, they are able to remember and process information.
Their skill include : physical coordination, sports, using body language, craft, using their hands to possible careers interest (e.g physical education teachers, athletes, etc.

e. Musical/ Rhythmic Intelligence 

Ability to produce and appreciate music. These musically inclined learners think in sound. Rhythmic and patterns. They immediately response to music either appreciating or critizing what they hear. Many of these learners are sensitive to environmental sounds.
Their skill include : plying instruments, composing music, remembering melodies, understanding the structure and rhythmic of music etc. possible career (e.g. musician, composer, etc)

f. Interpersonal Intelligence 

Ability to relate and understand others. These learn try to see things from other people’s point of view in order to understand how they think and feel. They often have an uncanny ability to sense feeling, intentions and motivation. They are great organizer. Generally they try to maintain peace in group setting and encourage cooperation. They use both verbal e.g. speaking and non-verbal language e.g. eye contact, body language to open communication channels with others.
Their skills include : seeing things from other perspective (dual perspective), listening, understanding other people’s mood, and feelings, cooperating with groups, noticing peoples moods, motivations and intentions. Communicating both verbally and non verbally, establishing positive relations with other people. Possible career that suit these with this intelligence include politicians, managers, teachers, business person, social workers, conselor. Etc.

g. Intrapersonal Intelligence.

Ability to self-reflect and be aware of one’s inner state of being. These learners try to understand their inner. Feelings, dreams, relationships with they often have an affinity for thought based pursuits such as philosophy. They learn best when allowed to concentrate on the subject by them selves.
Their skill include: reflecting and analyzing them selves, desires and dreams, evaluating their thinking patterns, reasoning with themselves. Understanding their role in relationship to others. Possible career that suit those with this intelligence include writers, scientist, theologians, psychologist, Researchers, Philosophers etc.

h. Naturalistic Intelligence.

Ability to nature and grow things “Naturalist” learn best when the subject involves collecting and analyzing. They also don’t enjoy learning unfamiliar or seemingly useless subjects with little or no connections to nature. It is advised that naturalistic learners would learn more through being outside or in kinesthetic way. Career that suit those with this intelligence include naturalists, gardeners, formers, conservations, etc (Gordon Dryden and Jeanette Vas, 2003 : 342 -355)
